How to clean ETO UNIFORMS garments

As our garments (Battledresses, Shirts, Coats, GS Caps and Tam O'Shanters) are made from 100% natural organic merino wool avoid any chemical cleaning as you can damage or destroy the whole garment.

We recommend using just hand washing (no washing machine program) in water with temperatures maximum 20 degrees Celsius (all the time use thermometer for safety). Wash the stuff separately, e.g. Battledress then other parts of uniforms like shirts, socks, etc. Use just hard natural soaps and no other washing tablets or pounders for washing machines. The best process is to prepare the soap bath by adequate volume of soap shredded to the 20 degrees water and melted in the water. Do not use any spin cycle in washing machine but separate the water gently and handy to press as much water from the uniforms as you can by hand. Then dry the uniform in warm area (not hot) and not under the direct sun or some heating device. Under this treatment the wool garments can shrink by 2-5% but maybe not and all depend on the good process.

If you have on the uniform hard dirt before the washing process carry out the dry cleaning by use of gently brush, we recommend using WW2 British military brush for clothing with not hard hairs. Try to brush up all dried mud and dust and if it helped the washing is not necessary.

Please, be prepared that after this process the woolen garment will have bigger number of hairs on its surface and the fabric of the garment will have larger volume at the first look what is caused by the brushing a washing process. In WW2 era all wool fabrics were delivered from fabric mills with special surface treatment called fulling. Fulling was requested in WW2 era specifications for each contract for manufacturing e.g. Battledress uniforms, Greatcoats, Shirts, etc. Such fabric on his surface on both sides looks smooth and shined, and its real volume is pressed by large press machine (Decator). With this measure the manufacturer was able to store in rolls larger amount of running meters of manufactured fabric as its volume was temporarily reduced. On the other hand, the manufacturer of garments has the easier way to process the parts of garment during the sewing processes as the fabric was sliding and thin.

Our garments are coming to your hands with fulling as brand-new garments in WW2 era and this effect is lost after several physical use in various weather or after the first brushing or washing or both.
